Letters. 1915-1932.

The letters are written to H. Duncan Hall by John Le Gay Brereton, poet, librarian at Fisher Library, University of Sydney and later Sydney University's Professor of English Literature. The members of the Hall family and Brereton were bush-walking companions. When Duncan left for Oxford the letters began. They are in two batches. The first providing comment on the reaction in Sydney to some of the vital issues of the war years: conscription, Daniel Mannix, the I.W.W., Billy Hughes and censorship as well as University affairs. There is a break (1920-1925) when Duncan returned to Australia. The second batch ends with Brereton's death in 1932. They include descriptions of the founding of the Fellowship of Australian Writers and comments on John Anderson, F.A. Todd, H.M. Green and others. Some of Brereton's poems appear throughout the letters.
